When the body experiences low oxygen levels or high carbon dioxide levels, the blood vessels in the brain immediately dilate to increase blood flow to the brain, providing enough oxygen and glucose to maintain brain function. As a result, the person remains conscious and does not show obvious signs of rapid breathing. However, when the hypoxic state continues to worsen, even though brain blood flow may still barely maintain a compensated state, the blood supply to other organs, especially the heart, may reach a critical level. In particular, if the patient already has cardiovascular disease, acute myocardial ischemia or arrhythmias can occur, leading to sudden death.
