"When you have a strong will, it's like gaining a pair of wings," wrote Deaflympics tennis national athlete Lin Jia-Wen on her social media platform. Diagnosed with mild auditory nerve damage at the age of two, Lin faced significant challenges in speech recognition. However, driven by her passion for tennis and unyielding spirit, she not only overcame these obstacles but also won three gold and two silver medals across two Deaflympics events. She is now actively preparing for the 2025 Tokyo Deaflympics, hoping to bring glory to her country once again.

In an interview, Lin Jia-Wen shared her training schedule, stress management techniques, career challenges, and expectations for the future. To prepare for the 2025 Tokyo Deaflympics, daily training and conditioning have become routine for Lin. She revealed, "Due to my physique, I focus heavily on improving my physical qualities, including speed, strength, endurance, agility, and flexibility. These targeted training sessions have allowed me to remain competitive against taller and stronger Western players in international competitions."

Lin Jia-Wen started playing tennis in 4th grade and has participated in hundreds of matches over the years. Yet, she still faces pressure and anxiety during competitions. "Tennis is an all-encompassing sport, and every match comes with its own unique pressures," she said. Thanks to her strong self-dialogue skills, Lin has managed to overcome these mental challenges. Reflecting on one of the hardest moments in her career, she shared, "Before the 2017 Deaflympics in Samsun, Turkey, I had to face the possibility of withdrawing from the competition due to elevated liver enzyme levels. It was the toughest decision I ever had to make." Despite the challenges, she persisted and ultimately won gold in both singles and doubles events.

Her most memorable match was the 2022 Deaflympics doubles final in Brazil (delayed from 2021 due to the pandemic). Lin recalled, "The doubles final against Germany was also the last match of the round-robin tournament. Whoever won would take the gold medal. The night before, my partner Mei Ho told me it would be a tough match with slim chances of victory. Despite trailing 1–4 in the opening set, we regained our composure and won five consecutive games to take the first set 6–4. In the second set, we left no room for our opponents and won 6–1. It was another incredible comeback victory, just like our 2014 World Cup team match against the USA."

Currently, Lin Jia-Wen has clear goals for her athletic and professional career. In addition to her regular training, she uses competitions as a means to improve her adaptability between matches in preparation for the 2025 Tokyo Deaflympics. Long training and matches often result in muscle soreness, and Lin shared, "Relief patches are essential tools for every tennis player." She expressed her satisfaction with the BtNPN Plant Nano Patch: "This patch has a refreshing turmeric scent, is non-irritating, and effectively alleviates pain." She added, "I will continue to use this patch."

In addition to preparing for the Deaflympics, Lin Jia-Wen is actively involved in training younger deaf tennis players. She said, "I have high hopes for these young athletes, and they are all training with great dedication." Last year, Lin attended the signing ceremony for Tainan's first photovoltaic tennis court and actively participated in the establishment of a Deaf Tennis Training Center. She added, "I hope that once the Rende Photovoltaic Tennis Court is completed, relevant departments will support the establishment of the nation's first training base for deaf tennis players, providing an excellent environment for aspiring young athletes."

Looking forward to the 2025 Tokyo Deaflympics, Lin expressed her gratitude and expectations: "It's a rare opportunity for the Deaflympics to return to Asia, hosted in Japan. This will be my fourth time representing Taiwan at the Olympics. I’m deeply grateful to my coaching team and the Chinese Taipei Sports Association for the Deaf for their guidance and support. Special thanks to BODYVINE, 720, PHONAK, Xingda Coatings, Ichiban Bakery, TOMACAT, and other outstanding sponsors for creating customized products for me. I also appreciate the encouragement and support from Taipei Hualuo Rotary Club President Gao Man-Jun. Without them, my tennis dream wouldn't be possible!"
