With over 20 years of badminton experience, Alfy and Chelsea share similar beginnings in their badminton journey, both introduced to the sport by their fathers. Alfy recalls starting in third grade when his father took him to play badminton in a sheltered area near their home. He says, “While playing, I realized I had good control, and later that year, I joined the school badminton tournament and surprisingly won the championship. That kickstarted my badminton life.”
Chelsea also started because her father loved playing badminton. She shares, “When I was in elementary school, my dad noticed I had athletic potential and signed me up for the school team tryouts. Although I wasn't very good at first, my dad would take me to play with his coworkers every weekend. I would practice long rallies with an older sister, and one day, during school team training, it just clicked. I finally felt confident in my skills.”
When asked about their most memorable badminton experiences, Alfy highlighted the excitement of winning the University Cup championship. As a key member of Taiwan University's men’s team, which achieved four consecutive national championships from 2011 to 2014, Alfy recalls, “The most unforgettable moment was winning the championship match for the first time. It was a goal I had set in college, and after intense training and preparation, we finally made it to the finals and defeated our rivals. It was an incredibly moving experience.”
Chelsea shared her experience of rebuilding her team.
Chelsea shared her story of rebuilding her team. In her junior year, she became the team captain after most senior players had graduated, leaving only three juniors on the team. She worked hard to recruit new members, train them, and lead them through regional qualifiers to the national competition. By her senior year, the team had achieved their best-ever result, reaching the top eight in the University Cup.
Both Alfy and Chelsea once thought their greatest achievements in badminton were winning tournaments. However, over time, they realized that the friendships formed through badminton were the most valuable rewards. The two also met each other through badminton and eventually got married. Reflecting on their marriage, they shared, “Playing mixed doubles requires communication, compromise, and understanding—skills that are equally important in a marriage. Mixed doubles helped us grow as partners both on and off the court.” In 2022, they participated in the "Couples Cup National Badminton Championship" and won the mixed doubles title, a testament to their teamwork and partnership.
