Water Deer Sighted on the Nenggao Andongjun Traverse

Sasa, an international student from Malaysia, never imagined she would become so deeply connected with hiking. Browsing through her social media platforms, you’ll discover her passion for half-marathon running, cycling, and now hiking, with 62 Baiyue peaks already under her belt. It's hard to believe she once had zero interest in sports! So, what sparked her transformation into a fitness enthusiast?

Journey to the Peaks: From Graduate to Adventurer

Sasa Climbed Yushan After Graduation, Marking Her First Baiyue Experience

In 2020, as Sasa was preparing to graduate from university in Taiwan, she initially planned to return to Malaysia for work. Encouraged by her peers, she decided to challenge herself with Taiwan's highest peak, Yushan, as a graduation memory. Little did she know, this hike would ignite a lifelong passion for hiking, prompting her to stay in Taiwan and explore its breathtaking mountains. Hiking not only gave her the courage to face the unknown but also revealed a stronger, braver version of herself.

"I will never forget the moment I stood on the summit of Yushan," Sasa recalls. "Looking out, I could see the cloud layers over Hualien and Taitung, the rain falling over Taipei, and the twinkling city lights of Chiayi – all in one view. It was magical." That experience marked a turning point in her life; she began working on her fitness to prepare for more high-altitude adventures. For Sasa, hiking isn't just about fitness – it’s a way to experience the mountains fully.

A Brush with Danger: The Kalulu Cliff Incident

Sasa and Her Team Camped Overnight on Kalulu Cliff and Witnessed the Sunrise

Despite her experience hiking 62 Baiyue peaks, Sasa has had her share of perilous moments. In 2022, she and her companions faced a life-threatening situation while climbing the infamous Kalulu Cliff. Due to a miscalculation in timing, they left camp too late and strayed onto an old, dangerous trail. Forced to set up camp on a steep cliff, one of her companions even fell 10–15 meters multiple times. In one terrifying moment, Sasa had to pull a teammate back from the edge of a sheer drop. "I'm so thankful we survived," she says.

This experience made Sasa reassess her hiking preparation, including physical training, route planning, and equipment. Reflecting on the ordeal, she shares, "I still get chills thinking about it, but I'm grateful the mountain spared us. Nature's power commands our utmost respect."

Courage and Transformation: The Mountains Made Me Strong

When asked how hiking changed her life, Sasa responds, "The mountains showed me how strong my body truly is. My legs can carry me to places I never imagined." She adds, "I used to feel self-conscious about my thick thighs, but now I see them as a gift that allows me to climb these peaks. Hiking helped me love and appreciate my body."

For frequent hikers like Sasa, waterproof gear is essential. Rain jackets, waterproof pants, gaiters, and hiking boots must offer reliable protection against moisture. Dry bags safeguard spare clothes and electronics, while large plastic liners inside her backpack provide an extra layer of security against water damage.

Waterproofing Revolution: NewClean Delivers Unmatched Protection

Sasa Conducted a Waterproofing Test with NewClean Spray on Non-Waterproof Running Shoes – the Results Were Impressive!

After long hiking days, body soreness is inevitable. Sasa shares her recovery techniques, which include stretching, foam rolling, and using muscle relief tools. For on-the-go relief during hikes, she carries comfort patches in her first aid kit. Recently, she tried the amor BtNPN Plant-Based Nano Patch, and she’s impressed. "The relief is noticeable, and the patches are lightweight and easy to carry," she says. She adds, "The patch doesn't feel overly cool or irritating, and its turmeric scent reminds me of home-cooked meals in Malaysia – it feels warm and comforting."

For Sasa, hiking isn’t just a hobby – it’s a transformative journey. "I feel like my life truly began after I started hiking," she shares. Hiking is more than just reaching the summit; it’s about discovering inner strength. Sasa encourages others to step out of their comfort zones: "If it doesn’t harm yourself or others, go ahead and try. You might stumble upon unexpected rewards." Just as her journey began with Yushan, an unplanned decision can lead to life-changing experiences.
