Taiwan's mountainous regions are rich in resources, attracting many people for hiking and close encounters with nature. However, from July to November, during the peak activity period of the hornet, hornets are social insects with a complete social structure and hive organization. Therefore, when the hive is disturbed, they collectively attack intruders due to their strong nest defense behavior. Recently, a student hiking group from Pingtung encountered a hornet attack on the Jingshuiying Ancient Trail in Taitung, leading to the unfortunate death of 41-year-old guide Mr. Hong. This incident once again reminds us to stay calm and respond effectively when facing sudden dangers during outdoor activities.
1. Lower your body and quietly leave
Do not swat at the hornets, as this will provoke the entire hive.
2. If attacked, protect your head with clothing, lower your body, and quickly leave
Try to move in the direction of the wind to reduce air currents and the pheromone signals left by the stung individuals.
3. If the hornets continue to chase, scatter the group and leave the scene quickly
Those being attacked should run quickly, and those not being attacked should jog briskly to reduce the hornets' focus.
Finally, remember not to wave clothing while running, as this will create strong air currents that help hornets in the air identify the target, leading to more hornets chasing after you.
Sting wounds from hornets may result in blisters, ulceration, and severe pain, swelling, and itching. After being stung, apply an ice pack to the affected area to relieve pain and swelling, temporarily easing the discomfort. You may also use antihistamine ointment, but it is important to consult a doctor for a detailed examination! Additionally, watch out for signs of acute allergic reactions such as dizziness, palpitations, difficulty breathing, and loss of consciousness. If any of these symptoms occur, seek emergency medical treatment immediately!
Compared to bees, hornets have stronger venom and are more aggressive. During outdoor activities, it is advisable to avoid wearing bright clothes or applying perfume. Opt for smooth, light-colored clothing and hats, avoiding dark colors, woolen fabrics, or rough-textured materials that might provoke attacks.
When facing a hornet attack, staying calm is crucial. If stung, handle the situation promptly and seek medical attention. Following the correct steps will improve safety during hiking activities and protect your well-being.
